Helen & Hard, the architectural firm behind the popular Woodnest treehouse, has returned with a new forest retreat in Norway. Nestled near Hardangerfjord in Odda, the Woodnest Mountaintops consists of two unique treehouses anchored high above the forest floor on pine trees.
Ingenious Design Embraces Nature
Each treehouse is securely attached to a living pine tree via a steel collar, allowing the tree to grow naturally. The frame is crafted from glued-laminated timber (glulam) and clad in 18,000 individual wooden shingles, creating a rustic yet modern exterior.
The structure rises 6 meters (19.6 ft) above ground, with the tree running directly through the cabin interior, bringing a touch of nature into the space.
Cozy Interior with Space-Saving Features
Each Woodnest treehouse offers 14 square meters (150 sq ft) of carefully planned interior space. A bridge leads guests from the hillside into the cabin, where natural wood finishes and a compact layout create a warm ambiance.
The living area doubles as a bedroom, with an innovative elevating bed that lowers from the ceiling at the press of a button, maximizing the limited floor space.
Functional Amenities for Comfort
Inside, guests will find a compact kitchen with essential amenities, including a two-burner stove, refrigerator, sink, and cabinetry.
The bathroom area is equipped with a toilet, sink, and handcrafted wooden bathtub, separated from the main living area by glass for a touch of elegance.
For added comfort, modern features such as underfloor heating and Wi-Fi are included, allowing guests to enjoy the wilderness without sacrificing connectivity.
A Secluded Forest Escape
Reaching Woodnest Mountaintops requires a scenic 45-minute hike from a nearby town, with snowshoes needed during winter months.
For those seeking a unique forest retreat, bookings start at NOK 3,300 (around USD 295) per night, offering a one-of-a-kind experience high among Norway’s treetops.
